The Lucky buffalo hunter" shows a hunter beside a dead bison, and its subject headings place the scene within the American slaughter of the animal during the 1890s. By then the great herds that once covered the Plains had been cut to a small remnant, mostly by market and sport hunting in the 1870s and 1880s, so a photograph of a kill from this period looks back on a vanished abundance. St. Paul publisher T.W. Ingersoll issued the card around 1897 or 1898 as a stereograph, meant to be viewed through a hand stereoscope at home. Its jaunty title sits uneasily beside the animal's fate.
