Posed under the title "A proud moment for the buffalo hunter," this stereograph shows a hunter beside a bison he has killed, a scene that makes the card's subject plain. Issued around 1902 by the International View Company of Decatur, Illinois, under copyright by C.L. Wasson and numbered 889 in its series, it belongs to the wave of stereo views that sold well for home parlors in the early 1900s. By then the American bison had been reduced to a small remnant after the heavy slaughter of the 1870s and 1880s, so a picture that celebrates the kill now also records how close the species came to disappearing.
