Dancers from Tesuque Pueblo, a Tewa-speaking community north of Santa Fe, New Mexico, stand in buffalo costume in this portrait by Edward S. Curtis, made around 1927. It appeared as plate 600 in volume 17 of his multivolume survey *The North American Indian*, a project meant to record Native American life as Curtis believed it was disappearing. Buffalo dances among Pueblo peoples are ceremonial performances connected to the animal's importance in traditional life, and the hides and horns of the costumes are the details most worth studying here.
