Few rooms reveal Theodore Roosevelt's tastes as directly as this one, with a water buffalo head and two antelope heads mounted around the fireplace at Sagamore Hill, his home on Cove Neck near Oyster Bay, Long Island. Roosevelt built the house in the mid-1880s and lived there until his death in 1919, and the trophies reflect his lifelong enthusiasm for big-game hunting and natural history. The photograph appears in a scrapbook documenting the families of Theodore Roosevelt Jr. and Eleanor Butler Alexander Roosevelt, and catalogers date it between 1870 and 1900.
