A rider named Vern Elliott is caught mid-ride at Cheyenne Frontier Days, the Wyoming festival that began in 1897 to celebrate the cattle and ranching life of the American West. The 1910 date places the picture in the early years of organized rodeo, when staged contests of cowboy skill were drawing large crowds and photographers were just beginning to capture the action. Events built around bucking animals tested a rider's balance and nerve, and photographs from this period show how those contests looked to spectators at the time.
