The animal itself is the selling point here: a bison dominates the label for Buffalo Smoking Tobacco, a brand name that borrows the image of the shaggy beast of the American plains. In 1868, bison still roamed the Great Plains in enormous herds, though hide hunting and railroad expansion would drive them to near extinction within about two decades. Engraved labels like this one were pasted onto tobacco packages in the 1860s to identify a brand and catch a buyer's eye, and animal images were a common way to make a name memorable.
