Few subjects in the Western repertoire carry as much weight as the bison, and this engraving takes that subject as its title: a scene of "conjuring back the buffalo," a ritual of hoped-for renewal set against the vanishing herds of the late 1800s. Frederic Remington, who drew and painted the American West for magazines and books, often paired Plains figures with cowboys and soldiers, and the caption card's index terms reflect that mix of warriors, cowboys, and Native subjects. The record gives no date, so the piece is best read in its general period, when railroads, market hunting, and federal policy had already thinned the herds. The "Buffalo" on the gallery board refers to the animal, not the city.
