Travelers firing on bison from a Kansas Pacific Railroad train is the scene this wood engraving depicts. It appeared in *Harper's Weekly* in 1867, the New York illustrated weekly that brought frontier scenes to eastern readers, at a time when the railroad was pushing across Kansas and bison herds still ranged widely over the plains. Shooting from trains like this helped drive the collapse of the bison population in the following decade, a loss the engraving presents as ordinary entertainment for passengers.
