The building pictured is the home of the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society, set within Delaware Park, the large green space laid out by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in the 1870s. The society's museum and library were housed here as Buffalo grew into one of the country's major industrial cities, and the setting shows how the city's civic institutions were placed in its park system. The picture is an 8 by 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that documented American towns and landscapes in the early 1900s. Its survival in the Library of Congress collection makes it a useful record of the building and its grounds before later changes.
