Hotel Kaltenbach stands at the right edge of this view of Buffalo Avenue in Niagara Falls, New York, one of the hotels that catered to the steady stream of visitors drawn to the falls in the early 1900s. The picture was made as a large glass dry plate negative, between 1905 and 1920, by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American towns, scenic spots and streets for the travel market. Its street scene shows the boardinghouse and hotel row that grew up around the tourist trade, when a visit to the falls was a major trip. The negative's later donation to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949 is part of its record.
