This view of the Hotel Iroquois in Buffalo, New York, shows one of the city's prominent hotels during the early 1900s, when Buffalo was a busy rail and Great Lakes shipping center. The picture is a large 8 x 10 inch glass negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that documented American towns and landmarks for commercial sale. Large plates like this captured fine architectural detail, so the building's facade and street setting remain clear. The negative's catalog number and its 1949 gift to the State Historical Society of Colorado show how the company's work later passed into institutional collections.
