The Lafayette Hotel was one of the larger hotels in Buffalo, New York, and this view records its street front during the early 1900s. The Detroit Publishing Company made the picture, which was part of a large commercial effort to document American cities, towns, and landscapes for sale as postcards, booklets, and travel material. Two nearly identical 8 x 10 inch glass negatives survive, and the company's 1906 catalog helps place the image in that window. Hotels and their surrounding streets were common subjects for these views, since they showed the commercial life and traffic of a city at the time.
