The Hotel Statler is the subject here, a hotel in Buffalo that carried the name of Ellsworth M. Statler, the hotelier who built his reputation on giving every guest a private bath and a reliable standard of comfort. This 8-by-10-inch glass negative dates from roughly 1900 to 1910, when Buffalo was a busy rail and lake-trade city with a growing downtown. The Detroit Publishing Company made views like this one to sell as travel souvenirs and promotional pictures, so the image shows the building as its owners wanted it seen: a civic landmark in a prosperous city.
