This 8 by 10 inch glass negative shows a Catholic cathedral in Buffalo, New York, the seat of the city's diocese, and was made sometime between 1900 and 1910. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that sent photographers across the country to record cities, landmarks and scenery for travelers and publishers, produced it, and its catalog number is inscribed on the glass. Views like this show how churches anchored neighborhoods during Buffalo's industrial boom at the turn of the twentieth century. The large negative format captures architectural detail that smaller cameras of the period could not render as sharply.
