Cargo ships and grain elevators line this busy stretch of canal in Buffalo, New York, where the Erie Canal met Great Lakes shipping. As the canal's eastern terminus, Buffalo was a major grain-handling port in the early twentieth century, and elevators like these moved wheat from lake freighters into barges and rail cars. The Detroit Publishing Company made this glass negative sometime between 1900 and 1915, and its views of American cities were often used to promote travel. Here the camera records a working waterfront at the height of its activity.
