Shelton Square in downtown Buffalo, New York, is framed here by St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral and, at the left edge, the Prudential Building, two landmarks that mark the city's commercial core. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the country and later produced color prints, made this view on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative sometime between 1900 and 1915. Buffalo was then one of the largest and busiest cities in the state, and the square's mix of church spires and office blocks shows how civic and business life crowded together downtown. The pencilled notes on the negative are a reminder of how such plates were labeled and filed for later use.
