This group portrait shows the ship's company of the U.S.S. Buffalo, the Navy cruiser named for the New York city that had sponsored it. The crew is posed as a formal assembly, a common practice when naval vessels and their men were photographed for records and for sale as souvenirs. The image dates to roughly 1890 to 1901, a period when the United States Navy was modernizing with steel warships and expanding its role abroad. The picture was made from a large 11 by 14 inch glass negative by a photographer associated with the Detroit Publishing Company, whose catalog listed it in 1901. Because the sailors are shown in a single frame, it offers a useful record of uniforms and shipboard life from that era.
