The record gives this view as the Buffalo zoo, a title the National Photo Company wrote on the negative itself, though the record notes it is unverified. The Buffalo Zoological Garden had been part of the city's park system since the 1870s, and in the years this negative is dated to, zoos were popular outings where city families could see exotic animals up close. The National Photo Company made thousands of views of American cities for commercial sale in the early twentieth century, so this glass plate reflects that commercial documentary work. Viewers should look for the streaks and blemishes across the surface, which come from the natural breakdown of the original coating.
