Commercial Street runs alongside Lafayette Square in downtown Buffalo, and the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument stands at the far right edge of this view. The Detroit Publishing Company made the glass negative sometime between 1900 and 1915, during the period when the firm was documenting American cities and scenery on a wide scale. The square was a civic gathering place, and the monument honoring Union veterans gave it a formal focal point. The cataloger supplied the title, so the street's exact boundaries in the frame are worth checking against the plate itself.
