This Detroit Publishing Company glass negative shows a Labor Day parade on Main Street in Buffalo, New York. Congress made Labor Day a federal holiday in 1894, and by the turn of the century unions and civic groups in cities across the country marched on the first Monday of September to show their strength. The catalog subjects also note street railways and commercial buildings, so the streetcar tracks and storefronts along the route are as much a part of the scene as the marchers. The negative is dated only to a range of about 1895 to 1910, a period when the company was photographing American cities across the country.
