Unlike the other views on this board, this picture shows the men who served aboard the U.S.S. Buffalo rather than the city of the same name. The crew is posed in a group portrait on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate negative, a format common to commercial photographers of the late 1890s. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made views of American places and people for sale to travelers and publishers, is credited with the image. The ship was part of the Navy's expansion in the years around the Spanish-American War, when the service was building up its fleet and its enlisted ranks. Group portraits like this one preserve the faces and uniforms of ordinary sailors from that period.
