Commander Henry H. Hosley, shown here in a formal portrait, served aboard the cruiser U.S.S. Buffalo, a steel warship of the United States Navy that was active in the years around the turn of the twentieth century. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass plate negative, sold views of American cities, landmarks and ships to a wide public at the time. The plate's cracks and tape, which the record describes, show that it has been handled for decades, and they are part of its physical history.
