Buffalo's City Hall, shown here around 1905, was an 1870s landmark on Franklin Street, a mansard-roofed Second Empire building with a tall clock tower that made it one of the city's most recognizable civic structures. The picture comes from an 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its large-format views of American towns and landscapes in the decades around 1900. The plate later passed to the State Historical Society of Colorado, which received it as a gift in 1949. The building was eventually replaced by the Art Deco City Hall in Niagara Square, which opened in 1931.
