The Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument stands in Niagara Square, the civic center of Buffalo, and was built to honor residents who served in the Civil War. Its tall shaft and figures make it a landmark of the city's downtown, and in this view the monument anchors the square. The picture is a glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that traveled the country recording towns, monuments, and scenery in the early 1900s for postcards and travel books. Its catalog numbering suggests it was made around the turn of the twentieth century, when many American cities were raising memorials to the war.
