The subject here is the McKinley Monument, an obelisk set in a plaza in Buffalo, New York, honoring President William McKinley. McKinley was shot at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo in September 1901 and died within the week, so the city became the site of his memorial. This view, made around 1908, is a large 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for documenting American towns, parks, and monuments in the early twentieth century. Its survival in the Library of Congress collection gives a clear record of how the square looked soon after the memorial was built.
