Here the marksman Walter Winans poses with a rifle beside a dead buffalo, a trophy-style pattern common in big-game photographs of his era. Winans, an American-born shooter who spent much of his life in England, was known for competitive marksmanship and won Olympic gold in 1908. By the late 1800s, bison had been hunted nearly to extinction in North America, so a picture like this also records that decline.
