Around 1908, the Detroit Publishing Company recorded the Young Men's Christian Association building in Buffalo, New York, on a large glass-plate negative. Buffalo was then a busy Great Lakes port and rail hub at the eastern end of the Erie Canal. By that time the YMCA had grown from a religious outreach for young men into a network of city buildings with reading rooms, gymnasiums, classrooms and residence rooms. Photographs like this one show how such civic institutions presented themselves to the public.
