Gates Circle is a traffic circle on Buffalo's Delaware Avenue, where the city's park and parkway system, laid out in the late 1800s by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, meets the street grid. This large glass negative, made sometime between 1900 and 1910, records the circle at a time when streetcars and carriages shared the roadway and the new park boulevards were drawing city residents out to the green spaces. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced this view, sent photographers across the country to document towns and landscapes for sale as postcards and prints. The 8-by-10-inch format gives the scene a sharp, detailed record of its streets and surroundings.
