The Castle Inn stands out among the Detroit Publishing Company's Buffalo views for its name, and this 8 x 10 inch glass negative records the hotel as the company's photographers saw it sometime between 1900 and 1910. Buffalo was then one of the busiest rail and Great Lakes shipping centers in the country, and its hotels served a steady stream of travelers and businesspeople. The notation "No. 197 Clif." on the negative shows how the company numbered and filed its plates before any prints were made. The glass later passed to the State Historical Society of Colorado as a 1949 gift.
