Elmwood Avenue crosses a waterway in Buffalo, New York, and the catalog places this view possibly in Delaware Park, the large park laid out by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in the 1870s. The image survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American towns, rivers and parks for commercial sale in the decades around 1900. Its subject headings, bridges and waterfronts, reflect the era's interest in recording civic improvements. Because it was made on a large glass plate, it holds fine detail that smaller formats often lost.
