The title identifies the sitter as Kó-pi, also rendered as "Buffalo Mountain," and places the portrait at San Juan, the Tewa pueblo on the Rio Grande in northern New Mexico. Edward S. Curtis made the photograph around 1905, while he was documenting Native peoples across the West for his multivolume work *The North American Indian*. The image was later published in volume 17 of that series. Its subject headings point to Tewa clothing and dress of the 1900-1910 period, so the portrait is useful for seeing how a Pueblo man was dressed and posed for Curtis's camera.
