Joseph Kemp's 1978 gelatin silver print belongs to his *Working People* series, a group of studies of steel and auto plant workers in Buffalo, New York. The record identifies its subjects as African American laborers, which places the picture within the city's industrial workforce at a time when its mills and assembly lines still anchored local employment. Buffalo's steel production, centered on the large plants along Lake Erie and in nearby Lackawanna, along with its auto manufacturing, had supplied jobs for generations of workers, and the late 1970s were the start of a long decline in those industries. Pictures like this one record the people behind that economy as well as the machinery.
