Lyman H. Howe was a traveling showman who toured America with film programs in the late 1890s, and this chromolithograph advertises his "new magic pictures," a phrase that signals the novelty audiences found in early motion pictures. Printed by the Courier Company in Buffalo, New York, the poster dates to 1898 and carries the copyright notice for that year. Howe's shows were staged in theaters, opera houses and temporary venues, and posters like this one were used to draw crowds to a form of entertainment that was still new and often presented as a wonder. The piece has also been shown in a museum exhibition on the relationship between American art and early film.
