Louis Hennepin's *A New Discovery of a Vast Country in America* includes this engraving of a buffalo on page 8 of part 1, and the catalog also tags it with a pelican and an opossum. Hennepin, a Recollect friar, traveled the Great Lakes and upper Mississippi region for France in the late 1670s and wrote about what he saw. The London edition, printed for several booksellers, appeared in 1698, and the book's illustrations gave European readers some of their first printed views of animals from the interior of North America.
