Portsmouth, New Hampshire, was one of the busiest colonial seaports, and this view shows the William Pitt tavern, which the record says was probably built in 1770. The name likely honors William Pitt the Elder, the British statesman whose opposition to the Stamp Act made him popular with many colonists, and several American taverns carried his name. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative was probably made around 1907 by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to record American towns, buildings and landscapes around the turn of the century.
