The old Wester tavern is a c1892 photographic print whose title names a single building rather than a town or event, so the subject is one particular public house. The record is thin: it notes only that the picture was copyrighted by F. Hancock, and the description comes from an old caption card that has not been verified. Still, the picture belongs to a long American tradition of documenting local taverns and saloons in the late nineteenth century, when such buildings were often the social centers of small communities, hosting travelers, townspeople and meetings. Photographs like this one were frequently made for local record or commercial use, so the building's exterior and street setting can reveal much about how these establishments looked and fit into their neighborhoods.
