Ponsie's Tavern and the old harbour market share this watercolor, which dates from between 1808 and 1816 and shows a Jamaican waterfront town during the British colonial period. Markets like this one were busy meeting points where traders, planters' households, and enslaved and free people bought, sold, and exchanged food and goods. Taverns in such towns offered rest and refreshment to travelers arriving by road or sea. The painting is a useful record of how public life was organized around a small colonial port in the early nineteenth century.
