The sign in the foreground, reading "visitors welcome," sets this view of Munroe Tavern apart from the other pictures on the board. The tavern in Lexington, Massachusetts, was a working inn on the morning of April 19, 1775, when British troops marching toward Concord passed through the town, and British officers used it as a headquarters that day. By the time this photograph was made, between 1910 and 1920, the Detroit Publishing Company was documenting American towns and landmarks, often for travel promotion. The building was later run as a museum by the Lexington Historical Society, which explains the welcoming sign.
