An electric locomotive built for the Oliver Iron Mining Company in Minnesota anchors this view of the state's iron country, where ore was hauled by rail from mines on the Mesabi Range. Electric engines drew power from overhead wires or a third rail, which spared workers the smoke and cinders of steam. The negative belongs to the National Photo Company, a commercial firm that photographed American places in the early twentieth century, and Herbert A. French gave it to the Library of Congress in 1947. The date is estimated from neighboring negatives, and the title came from the company's own notes, so the details are worth checking. Streaks and other marks from deteriorated coatings are visible on the glass.
