A small steam locomotive pulls a line of cane cars on a two-foot gauge track in India, a narrow width often chosen for hauling sugar cane from the fields to processing mills. Light railways like this were common on Indian sugar estates in the early twentieth century, since narrow track could be laid cheaply through cultivated land. The glass negative was made by the National Photo Company, a commercial firm that photographed places around the world, and it dates to between 1910 and 1920. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from deterioration of its original coating, which is worth keeping in mind when judging fine detail.
