The record identifies this as a Southern Railway locomotive pulling the Crescent, a named passenger train that ran between New York and New Orleans. The picture dates to about 1916 to 1917, when the National Photo Company, a Washington firm that photographed railroads, cities and public events, was producing large numbers of views. The image survives as a glass negative, which the record notes has streaks and blemishes from deterioration of its original coating. The title comes from the company's own notes on the negative sleeve and has not been independently verified.
