This picture shows a locomotive associated with the Southern Railway's Crescent, a named passenger train that carried travelers between New York and New Orleans. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm that documented cities, industry, and transportation in the early twentieth century, made the glass negative sometime between 1916 and 1917, when railroads were central to long-distance travel and freight. The title comes from data the company recorded on the negative and has not been independently verified, so the specific engine shown is uncertain. Streaks and blemishes on the glass are typical of deterioration in its original coating and do not reflect the scene itself.
