The locomotive is identified in the record as belonging to the Southern Railway and carrying the name of its Crescent service, a passenger route that linked the Northeast with New Orleans. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm that produced large numbers of commercial views of railroads and other subjects in the early twentieth century, made the negative around 1916 or 1917. The title comes from information the company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, and it has not been independently verified, so the identification should be read with that in mind. Viewers should also notice the streaks and blemishes across the glass, which come from deterioration of the original coating over time.
