A named passenger train sets this locomotive apart: the record's title, "So. R.R. Co. Crescent," points to the Crescent, a Southern Railway express that ran between New York and New Orleans. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C. commercial studio that documented railroads and many other subjects in the early twentieth century, made the glass negative around 1916 to 1917, when steam locomotives still carried most of the country's rail traffic. Because the title comes from unverified notes on the negative sleeve, the identification should be treated as provisional, and the glass shows streaks and blemishes from deterioration of its original coatings.
