The *John Bull* was built in England by Robert Stephenson and Company and delivered to the Camden and Amboy Railroad in New Jersey in 1831, making it one of the earliest locomotives to run in America. This glass negative, from the National Photo Company Collection, shows the engine nearly a century after its arrival, and its subject is catalogued from data the company recorded, which has not been independently verified. The streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the natural breakdown of its original coating, so the negative carries its own history alongside the locomotive.
