Its title, "The people's line--Take care of the locomotive," sets this print apart from the many 1840 campaign images built around log cabins and cider barrels, because it uses a railroad engine as its central figure. The record names Henry Clay and William Henry Harrison among its subjects. Both were central to the 1840 contest, and Harrison became the Whig nominee after Clay lost the party's nomination in 1839. Inexpensive woodcut sheets like this one, sold in New York, carried partisan messages to voters who might never read a long editorial, and the hand-applied watercolor made each copy look more lively.
