A locomotive standing at a station is the subject of this steel engraving, which the record dates to about 1870. The plate was copyrighted in the name of the American Bank Note Company, a firm better known for printing banknotes, securities and postage stamps than for pictorial views. By the 1870s, railroads were expanding rapidly across the United States, and engravings like this helped spread images of trains and depots to a public eager to see the new technology. The fine line work in steel captures detail in the engine, rails and platform, which is worth noticing when comparing it with later photographic views of the same era.
