Danforth, Cooke & Co. was one of the best-known builders of steam locomotives in the United States, and this print documents its plant in Paterson, New Jersey, a city that grew up around water-powered textile mills on the Passaic River. The firm was founded in the 1850s by Danforth and Cooke, and its Paterson works turned out engines for railroads across the country and abroad before the company was absorbed into the Rogers Locomotive Works in 1880. Works views like this one were often made for trade catalogs and promotional use, so they show the scale of the shops, the yards, and the finished machines that made the factory's reputation. The record gives no date, so the print is best understood as a picture of the industrial city during the peak years of American steam railroading.
