The white border is what sets this card apart from its neighbors in the T206 series, which the American Tobacco Company issued between 1909 and 1911. Its color lithographed portrait sits inside a plain white frame, a format that let collectors tell the cards apart at a glance. Cards like this were tucked into cigarette packs as an inducement to buy, and the Library catalogs this example, printed by relief with halftone, as part of the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection of baseball cards. Its surviving form shows how commercial advertising of the period doubled as an early record of the players and the sport.
