Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia was among the largest locomotive builders in the United States, a firm founded by Matthias Baldwin in 1831. This panoramic view survives as two glass negatives, and the record suggests they may be the left and center sections of a three-part panorama, so the full scene was wider than what remains. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued many such views for commercial sale around 1900 to 1910, made the picture. Together, the sections show the scale of a plant that helped drive the nation's railroad expansion.
